Grabbing a cab should be safe and easy wherever you are, but in Dawlish you need to be careful.
By traveling in an illegal taxi you are not insured, in the event of injury, or worse, you are NOT covered. In the event of a dispute about a fare you have no recourse.
So how can you be sure the vehicle that turns up is legal?
1. All licensed and legal taxis have a taxi number plate on the back showing which Council they are licensed with and a unique number relating to the vehicle.
2. The same information contained on the taxi number plate is also contained on a paper license that is displayed on the windscreen.
3. All licensed Hackney Carriages must also be fitted with a roof sign saying ‘Taxi’ and a taxi meter which must be used for all fares.
But what if the vehicle meets that criteria, does that mean the driver is legal?…no, unfortunately it doesn’t.
Your driver should always have a visible ID card issued by the local authority, confirming they have undergone training, an extended driving course and an enhanced DBS background check, these checks are in place by the local authority to protect you.
Never be afraid to question your driver, request to see their ID card, or question the driver about the vehicle if you’re unsure.
Fake taxis and fake taxi drivers have no place in Dawlish, or on the roads anywhere. Don’t risk your safety or the safety of your family and friends by supporting them.
If you suspect your taxi of being illegal call 999 and report it.
You should also email licensing@teignbridge.gov.uk with details of the number/company you called and of the vehicle/driver you suspect to be illegal.
